Today’s recipe is an awesome tried and true recipe for Bacon Pasta. I decided to call this recipe “Bacon Lovers Creamy Penne Pasta” because bacon lovers will LOVE this dish!
Bacon Lovers Creamy Penne Pasta (aka, Bacon Pasta)
Pasta loaded with bacon, mushrooms, garlic, green onion, heavy cream and Parmesan cheese – bacon and pasta lover’s dream come true.
This tasty recipe is from Food.com, Bacon Pasta. It has 5 stars with 40 reviews. The name of the recipe really doesn’t do it justice. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would…it’s that good.
What You Need to Make Bacon Lovers Creamy Penne Pasta
Penne pasta, bacon (I used thick cut applewood smoked bacon), mushrooms, green onion, garlic, black pepper, Parmesan cheese and heavy cream.
I cooked my bacon in the oven and reserved the bacon drippings for the pasta (recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings to saute the mushrooms and garlic).
My best tip – have your ingredients prepped and ready to go for the last step, bacon cooked and cut, green onions sliced, heavy cream and Parmesan measured and pepper with a measuring spoon nearby.
I made this dish for my husband’s birthday yesterday and it was a phenomenal hit! This is definitely a recipe fit for special occasions.
Bacon Lovers Creamy Penne Pasta
Ingredients
- 1 box penne pasta (16 oz), cooked according to box
- 12 slices bacon, cooked and cut into small pieces, reserve 2 Tablespoons of drippings. (I used thick cut applewood smoked bacon and *”fried” it in my oven. If using thick cut bacon, you can use less slices) see tips below
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup green onion, sliced
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (recipe calls for 2, but I used 3)
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
It’s best to have all of your ingredients prepped, measured and ready to go.
First, cook bacon (see tip below) and reserve 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings.
Next, start to prepare pasta according to directions on box.
In a large skillet, using bacon drippings, saute mushrooms and garlic in bacon grease over medium to medium-high heat until mushrooms are tender – approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Turn heat down to low.
When pasta is ready, pour on top of mushrooms and garlic in skillet over medium heat. Next, add heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. Stir over medium heat until well blended, all the cheese has melted and the sauce is thick and creamy.
Last, add pepper, green onion and bacon. Stir until well blended and serve right away. Enjoy!
Tips
- *I “fry” bacon in the oven, it’s super easy with a lot less mess and a cinch to clean up. You can see how to do it here, Oven-Fried Bacon.
- Best tip – have all of your ingredients ready to go. Fry your bacon ahead of time. Have your ingredients, sliced, minced and measured. This makes it so much easier when it’s time to add the final ingredients to the pasta.

On average how many people does this recipe serve?
Mary Neumann
Kacie, It can serve 6, it all depends on the size of the portions. Most boxes of 16 oz of penne pasta state 8 servings. If you like big portions 6. This is rich, so smaller portions, up to 8.

Has anyone tried using cream of mushroom soup instead of fresh mushrooms and heavy cream?

You want to use shredded Parmesan cheese, not the powder stuff on the shelf – but the good stuff.
Unknown
In the pics of the ingredients, it shows shredded parmesan, but in the recipe it says grated parmesan. Does it matter which one I use? Thank you.

Hi Mary! I just wanted to point out that the mushrooms were left out of your ingredients list. I looked at the food.com recipe and saw it's a half cup fresh sliced if anyone is wondering. Thank you for the great recipe. I've been looking for some good, quick one dish meals.
